(eParisExtra) The first “Cybathlon,” a world competition for people with disabilities to compete against each other using bionic technologies to augment their bodies, will be held in Germany October 8. The obstacles are designed around common physical struggles that people with disabilities encounter in everyday life. Even the seemingly most mundane activities can be an unexpected challenge put forth at the Cybathlon. These challenges range from exoskeleton pilots racing along a track made up of different textured surfaces, to an amputee with robotic prosthetics carrying a cup of tea up a flight of stairs.
This competition also brings together many scientific minds in the rehabilitative robotics field. Each pilot is basically sponsored by a research team from a lab or company that’s responsible for that pilot’s technology.
