(BizJournals.SanAntonio) San Antonio-based Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) is standing up a new laboratory focused on ‘co-robots’ (collaborative robots) that would potentially work collaboratively and safely with humans for industrial uses. At the new lab, SwRI’s is building computer code that enables off-the-shelf robotic arms to operate in conjunction with humans and allow more nuanced movements, such as taking items out of someone’s hands on a factory line.
SwRI was an early supporter of an open-source robot operating system used on the factory floor called ROS-Industrial. It can enable robots to communicate with each other and work in unison — a big challenge for manufacturers.
